Work | New Horizon School Westside
This master plan and fundraising package for a K-6 Islamic parochial school for 200 students on an urban infill site in west Los Angeles envisions a school that doubles as a community center for the population it serves. The existing school occupies the same site in a series of modular buildings as well as an existing apartment building. This is a view of the main entry to the school as seen from Sawtelle Blvd. The street edge of the building was layered with a series of commercial storefronts to better integrate the building into the existing neighborhood fabric.

This interior courtyard serves as the main arrival point at the school as well as the primary social and gathering space for the students and faculty.
.
This illustrated site plan shows the scale and relationship of the courtyard and surrounding buildings with the context.

.
A variety of massing options were explored on the site, including options for both the retention and removal of the existing apartment building.
.
The program of the school layered strategically on the site considering both horizontal and vertical adjacancies.

Massing and program allocation through planning happened in conjunction, ensuring they were both working together throughout the process.
