This is a two bedroom addition to a prototypical suburban tract house East of Los Angeles. Uniquely, this house was situated at the top of its subdivision, giving nature a strong presence, as can be seen in this rendering of the upper bedroom.
The addition was studied extensively in model form as roof profile came to be central to the design.
This rendering illustrates the final outcome of this model process, wherein the upper bedroom cantilevers out towards the view and simultaneously shelters a patio below.
A view of the built addition
Per city ordinance, the addition (as seen on the left) had to be indistinguishable from the existing house when seen from the street.
From inside the upper bedroom, as view of the ceiling as it results from the roof profile.
Standing in the same room looking out towards nature, as imagined in the preliminary rendering.
